A solar flare is characterized as a sudden, fast, and serious increase in the suns brightness.
A solar flare happens when geo-magnetic energy that has developed in the sun builds up and is abruptly discharged. Radiation is discharged over the whole electromagnetic range, from radio waves at the long wavelength end, through optical emanation to x-beams and gamma beams at the short wavelength end. The amount of energy discharged is equal to over a million 100-megaton hydrogen bombs blasting at once.
Solar Flares can cause Electromagnetic Pulses- destroying all electronics!
Solar flares seriously impact the nearby space climate in and around the region of the Earth. They can create floods of extremely powerful particles in solar winds, known as a solar proton event. These particles can affect the Earth’s magnetosphere, and present radiation dangers to shuttle and space explorers. Moreover, massive solar flares are often accompanied by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) which can trigger geo-magnetic storms that have been known to wreak havoc on satellites and crash power grids and communications.
